Plane engines are in the center, because they only react from airflow from the motor, but a number of this reaction mass (and combustion ingredients) is breathed rather then carried aboard. Therefore, "particular impulse" might be taken to indicate both "per response mass", as with a rocket, or "for every gasoline burned" as with cars and trucks. T
